Hi all,

Just thought i would share a few pics of my Chinese quince. It got quite hammered by White fly this year due to the surrounding garden it was in and it was almost impossible to cure until i moved. I defoliated to get rid of all the eggs and hence missed the autumn colour. Next year.
The quince is very much still being developed as you can see from the grafts and new first branch that is slowly being grown. Hopefully in a few more seasons it will well in to the ramification stages. I haven’t yet had flowers on it but i am looking forward to when i do.

I also sprayed the tree with lime sulphur to try to kill any remaining nasties.

Cant wait for spring.

Hi Jow , very nice looking quince you have there .I had several a few years ago but give up on them . They never performed well in the hot and cold up here as bonsai however they flourish in the garden . White fly was also an issue , yet i cant kill one particular plant with roundup , it continues to sucker up .It would be nice to see yours in flower .Cheers Alpineart

Im assuming that in the photo after defoliation, that the lower left hand branch (the really long one) is going to be the new first branch?

Please excuse my ignorance, but is that not on the inside of a bend?

I too cant wait to see an update with some flowers.

Hi Jow,

I too have missed the autumn colour with my chinese quince. (twin trunk purchased from Shi Bui) while the tree is very healthy and does not have insect problems I suspect our very wet autumn might be the reason.
Perhaps the colour is still on its way as the tree is still completely full of green foliage.

hey jow what are the dimensions of this tree? height etc?

Hi Dave,

I guess you could say it is on the inside of a bend but that doesnt particularly worry me. I tend to only worry about that when the bend is quite accute.

Hopefully i will get some flowers soon.....

Gerard: Mine had not started to turn when i defoliated it. Some of the leaves were only just starting to show signs of changing from green but were still for all intensive purposes green. If you don’t get colour soon i would put it down to the weird weather we have experienced this year. It would be nice to see some bright reds though!

Astroboy76: I would estimate the tree is around 50cm high. I will measure it tonight and let you know.

I just took a photo, this tree does not know autumn has passed. I am also considering defoliating as I am keen to get this tree into its new pot. I fear that it may go right through winter without a dormant spell.

Our trees in the garden have coloured and lost leaves now. The younger ones in the bgrowing beds all still have green leaves with just a couple showing colour. the ones in bonsai pots have lost their leaves but had very disappointing cour this year.

Good to see you guys are doing good things with those trees. They are both looking really good.

Yes both the trees are coming on well but it always pays to start with good material. It is interesting that it has not been the year for good colour for you either, perhaps the mild summer is to blame.

Gerard, I dont think you will have a problem defoliating to repot. When i got mine i repotted and cut back the roots very hard. It bounced back very quickly so i wouldnt be too worried if you need to do any big root work. Mine had great roots thanks to Neil and i am sure yours will have too.

I also measured the tree tonight.

480mm from rim of pot to tip of tree

and

65mm from rim of pot to base of pot.

Over all it is 545mm which is pretty close to my guess a couple of days ago.

Just a quick update,

My quince thinks its spring. I have re-potted and it has started to grow out a new set of leaves. Does anyone know from what age you can expect flowers and fruit? I cant wait to get some flowers.

I have a few pics of the roots of mine on my blog http://www.nichigobonsai.com. I cut it back very hard in the roots when i first got it and you can see from the pics it has responded with a beautiful fine root mass. Great species.

Cydonia I know, but they are both about to shoot:

The little one is a pup from the big'un, they live in the same yard, the little one on a warmer patio, the big one out on the ground. No leaves on the littlie, still full leaf, no colour at all on the other. And this after 20 or 30 frosts! And they are both shooting, a fortnight earlier than they ever did in Sydney. Completely perverse. If anyone has ideas about getting them to flower, I'm keen to know. Gavin
