Hi. I have this grafted garden centre j maple which has a reasonably good trunk I have just removed about half of the tree by cutting three large branches which formed the upper half of this tree . Will I be ok to repot this tree in spring or will it be in a weak state after it's chop. ? Thank any info would be great .

Paul, i wouldn't of cut it back till a little closer to spring, but it should be ok to repot just before the buds break in spring, You need to be fairly careful how much you chop a Palmatum as if it's too drastic ,sometimes they don't recover.that's just my experience with them. any pics mate ?

I am leaving all my maples till after the the school hold before root pruning, repotting and chopping.
Make sure you seal any cuts you have done already, as I have some get fungus infection over winter.

I would repot the tree this spring. The pruning will not have weakened it, rather it will be able to tolerate a good root pruning better because the top has been reduced.
I always prefer to repot trees I have bought sooner rather than later to get them into a potting mix I know - too many problems trying to water and feed differently for different mixes. Also the sooner you sort out the roots the better for the tree - commercial grown trees often have a tangled mess of roots not suitable for bonsai.
