Hi all,
I finished off wiring the tree late today and will do some nore bending and then final placement of branches soon.
Lots of choices to take and decisions to make.

Hi Grant,
Very interesting. May I ask about the wrapping under the wire? Looks like plastic?

It is a very broad and strong grafting tape. You can pull it quite tight and you can see through it.

This looks really great. I love the cut in the pot. Its as if you've bent it, hit the rim and thought nah it needs that little bit more.

1 Ready for candle snap but I went a bit further.JPG
2 better angle for top bend but boring lower branch.JPG
3 Lower branch cranked in a little.JPG
4 Apex removed to highlight next bend.JPG
5 What to do with the skinny little bottom branch.JPG
6 Cut it off of course.JPG
7 Will need a new apex eventually and sharper bends.JPG
8 Cut off unecessary back branch near apex.JPG

Well i looked at this tree yesterday and it needed a candle snap but I went a bit further.
The lower trunk looked a bit boring compared to how much I had been able to bend the top trunk so I just racheted it in a bit. The tree was so healthy that i thought it could tolerate a bit more work so I chopped off the unnecesary apex, tried to reposition the small lower branch but ended up cutting it off. I also simplified the top etc.
Scots pines do thicken well in pots so I am hoping that in 10 or 20 years time it will look natural ; like a tree collected in the wild.
This was mainly an exercise to see how hard I could bend a pine and the answer is; a lot.

Nice job Grant, i'll bet that was fun. I have to say i didnt mind it with the apex but either way it looks great. I guess it will have to stay on for a year or two so you will get some scarring but pines dont mind that. Cant wait for the outcome.
