Come on buds! - help with yamadori peach

Hey everyone,
I've got my urban yamadori peach still going well from last spring's dig up. She's been in a big grow box for a year now, and was going strong with shoots all over last summer. I lost half of the hardened shoots over winter due to die back, but the ol girl's sending out some great new shoots.

My question for any advice from you wise ones is: is there any way to coax some new shoots from her on the back and right side of her trunk? I'm inexperienced in knowing if there's a way to encourage growth. Like does angling her to have these sides in the direct sun help? I've even heard about making small little nicks in bark to cause a bud to appear (but that sounds like an old wife's tale to me).

But I'm prepare to let the lotto of nature apply here, and i can work with whatever she throws out!

Any advice or tips mega appreciated, thanks heaps!
Jozaeh

Hi Joz, I don't think there is any good way except removing low and unwanted shoots to encourage growth in higher up places.
As to this stump, I think you don't really need branches in the mentioned places at all. I would carve those straight branches out and change the planting angle abit. I think that way you will make the most out of the existing new growth and will also have a better tree.
Cheers,
DK

hey there,

when i had my crabapple stump only shooting buds out on oen side i just turned the stump so that the bare side got most fo the sun and it shot out a few new buds after a few weeks. could just be coincidence though.

It will depend on if you have any live cambium on that side of the tree. Easy to check but peach are notorious for die back on certain parts of the tree. this is why they throw low shoots easily.

Hey DK,
that's a great idea hey, I originally was hoping for 'more shoots than i know what to do with' but i'll just work with what the tree gives me. An a super carve out and lean over will be great.

thanks!

Hey Astro!
hmmm....well i'm trying my luck in the same way as well. I've got the bare side facing the sun and we'll see what happens.

thanks,
Jozaeh

heya Bodhidharma,
Well I gave her a little slice in the bark to see and it seems like she doesn't have any life cabmium on that bare side, shame! So it looks like that side will be a mega carve out canvas, woohoo!

thanks,
Jozaeh

Use the dead side for a juniper phoenix graft . . . That way, you get two trees for the price of one! :lost:

Oh man that would be perfect hey. For some reason though, I've done some grafts before and I just can't turn my brain off knowing that I've 'stuck' a tree to a piece of deadwood, it's like I can't 'UNnotice' it like it's fake or something. It's so silly. But options are options, and that sure is one Andrew. One thing's for sure, my dremel is getting prepped.
