This is a Pine tree thats been at my parents home for about 50 years or more, would really like to know what type of pine it is and how to get a good starter from it. I have tried to grow the seeds several times with no luck but i found this new growth on it and was wondering if i could cut it off and try to grow it. I have looked for a good tree to layer off but most of the thick branches have spindly long branches coming out from them caused by old age i guess. I would love to get a tree from it because i have grown up in this tree when i was a kid and it will always be a part of our family history. Photos of the tree taken in 1971 with my dad ,sister & me :palm: (no chubby legs or clothes jokes please), and last week. I have also included the branch with new growth and some of the crazy branching on the tree. Hope you like and thanks for looking.

I don't think it's a pine , maybe a Casuarina :reading:

I'd also say a casuarina.
Air layering of these is apparantly fairly easy.

Hi Magzy,

I would do layering too. I would go for casuarina too.

I guess if do layering on this tree, the trick is how to water the layering parts in the summer.

Good luck :)

I always water my air layers with a large syringe and needle (get from a vets).

Thanks for reply's and info, i have never even given casuarina a thought as the fruit does not match any of the ones i have researched. My guess was a cypress pine maybe coastal cypress pine because the fruit and seed are a better match.

Hi Magzy , callitris of some sort -Australian Pine .I would treat it as a pine for air layering .Ring-bark method as well as a wire tornaquet method .If air layering in an open pot , watering is as easy as squirting a hose in the air and hit above the pot

I think high possibility that its a Callitris columellaris. Havent heard of anyone layering them, why not give it a go.
