:gday:

This Juniper procumbens nana was purchased as general nursery stock and started training in the usual Juniper cascade style. Never really being satisfied with the direction it was heading i decided a change was needed, so i wired it up and bent the shari out of it, :tu: .
The tree now stands only 230mm high and the pot it is in is 170mm high.

You bloody beast poor little tree, there it was going along nicely as a cascade and you go and bend the living shari out of it.

I like it not sure the tree does though.

Craig, I think you have taken a rather ordinary cascade and improved it 1000% mate.

Not sure about your choice of pot though . .

I'm looking forward to seeing this little puppy when the wire comes off. Good work!!!

you sure straightened it out
Question: What prep is needed to bend it like that? Is it just junipers that are mega bendy??

Cheers Pat

Pat093 wrote:Question: What prep is needed to bend it like that? Is it just junipers that are mega bendy??
Pat it depends on alot of factors mate. Thickness of branches/ trunks ,how hard or flexible are these branches/trunks , how many knots or deadwood areas there are ,etc,
I would say the most important factors to consider are;
1; make sure the wire/wires are applied correctly, when wiring for something like this you should be thinking forward, actually think about where you are most likely to bend the heaviest/tightest and which way you may be twisting the branch/trunk when you are bending.
2; make sure you use the correct wire, use wire that will hold it's postion after bending, you can use small tie wires to pull some areas tighter but generally you want the wires to hold position by themselves .
3;and this may sound wierd but  BE THE BRANCH/TRUNK,,you need to be in tune with whatever it is you are bending/twisting, Understand the way the material behaves, Feel what you are doing through your fingers(let your fingers do the talking), Listen to the material being bent(cracking, creaking, snapping noises), THINK about what you are doing, THINK about how the branch/trunk may react-is it likely to snap, should i bend this way or should i bend that way, what will happen if i try to bend it at that branch,,,,

Hope this helps a little Pat :)

Hi Pat, pines are also generally pretty flexible too.
And it is usually best to dry the tree out a little before doing major bends.
Cheers, Dario. :)

Hi Craig,

When Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mt Everest, he replied, "Because it's there". I can't help wondering if you bent your little tree so much was "Because it could be done".
No offense intended, just a pinch of salt added to all the sugar of the compliments. ;)

Hey Craig,

Why wait a lifetime for that cascade to really be something when you can bend it like Beckham :palm:

I have looked at it a few times & still trying to work out which branch of the cascade is now the apex :?: Would love to see some pics from other angles so I can follow the bends a bit more.....

Lisa, I prefer the version I heard many years ago... The reply "Why not"....

Hi Craig,
I'll keep my options open for a bit, waiting to see what happens next with the development of some more growth. :lost:
It's sure to remain a challenge forever, I bet!
