Calling all Azalea Experts

Hi there crazy kids!!
As I am a bit of an azalea gumby and know very little about them, I have a friend's tree which I have photographed and was wondering if anyone could help identify it. It has the smallest leaves I have ever seen and am told that it has never flowered. Can anyone help?

I have one similar that is a Satsuki azalea called a Sao Tome (I think that is what is called). Mine has never flowered, and I am told they flower VERY rarely.

Nice tree, there have been a few of them appear on this site. I think melaquin has some nice ones. Probably best to loose the moss on the trunk though, just for max tree health.

i have a one very small leaved azalea i bought for 2buks the other day, ill post pics of it progression soon but i thought they all flowered.

Hi John,
Yep 'Sao to Me' would be my guess aswell.
Apparently they flower once in a blue moon.

I cut back from the original stock quite hard and almost a year on (i will have to get a picture) it has really come on. The foliage is quite dense now.
Great little plant, so easy to work with and it seems quite hardy. If only it flowered

i have got 2 sao to me azalea's and had both for 3 years and none have flowered so i asked
leong at bonsai south and he said they dont flower and they never need defoliating due
to the small leaf they have i have one which is 11 years old never flowered and the other is
6 years old never flowered so in 11 years no flowers how often is a blue moon

No need to guess.. It's definitely a sao to me. I wasn't aware that they were classified as a satsuki though?
They are gorgeous little trees. I have one at the moment, have had others in the past, but they died. I love the one I've got atm. Will be going into a bonsai pot next year.
They are classed as "non flowering" but, if yo're lucky, you might get one or two flowers every now and then, The flwoers are very large, however, so you wouldn't want to display it with it/them.
Take well from cuttings too.
