A Pear of Apples

This is a pair of Ballerina apples that were planted in 1997. In 2008 they had finally outgrown their alloted space & had to go. Cut down to stumps & moved to my front garden to recover & rebuild. Both trunks are hollow from the bottom up, once they have settled into potted life I will start carving them up.

Matt did you carve the hollows into your trees then let nature do its thing for a few years????
I noticed alot of your trees are hectically hollowed and gnarly.
Nice play on words too

Hey bud,
The hollows are completely natural, as a result of chopping the roots right back 3yrs ago. If given time it would eventually consume most of the deadwood in this pair. As long as growth is solid I should keep ahead of it until they stabilise.
Most of my trees are collected from wild or suburbia, as a result deadwood, hollows etc all become par for the stock... You cant grow what nature produces....

I love the trunk on this one that hollow looks fantastic. Not sure if the dog in the last pic agrees with me though

Became a tripod at 12wks of age, curvature of the spine, misaligned hip, reduced chest capacity all add up to the wonky gait as shows in that pic.... she also has a nasty demeanour to boot (one of the many reasons I love my girl)
The hollow needs alot more work yet but I couldn't be bothered getting another power tool out at the time.

One of her favorite sleeping positions, showing off her stump... Don't tell her I posted this pic or I might be dinner
