HI, I have recently moved into a rental property, and there was a boring looking tree with no foliage which I thought was dead. How wrong was I? It is now flourishing with beautiful mostly purple coloured leaves with some green before changing purple and has large fine flowers. I was thinking of doing an air-layer, but first I need to know what it is.
I hope someone out there in the land of Ausbonsai can help.

rowan is correct, the variety looks like folius purpureus but could be grace. the best way to propagate is to ground layer it you just pull down one long branch and bury it about 8-12 inches deep with the tip of it facing out of the ground. ringbark it as you would an air layer and by winter you can disconnect from the mother plant and your layer should have a new fibrous root system. do a few or many layers as they dont all strike. i have not had as good results with air layering and the ground layer looks after itself. steve
