i've had this one for the last 6 months or so and it's very unappealing when it comes to bonsais.

i'm curious about:

what(if any) shaping i should attempt on it

what type of pot should i repot it into?

when will it be safe to repot?

when i repot, how should i do it? cut the roots? bare root it? do something to the rootball?

should i trim it or let it grow naturally for afew years?

how can i fatten up the trunk?

i put a standard bic lighter next to it for comparison


i'll try and get some better photos when i can

also, i have a maple that hasn't grown any buds this season, it was the first "bonsai" that i got, is their any chance that it's still alive?

hi mb,
this tree should be slip potted out into a growing bed to get somemore growth on it. Slip it out of the pot straight into the ground. Just let it grow,then every week or 2 feed with a liquid fertiliser.Soon as the weather warms up your tree will be powering on.After a few years when the trunk thickens then you will be able to start training your bonsai. Keep us posted with some progress photos and someone will be able to guide you along the way. Cheers!

afew weeks ago i built some wooden garden beds(out of old bed slates) that i'll lay against the fence, they're bottom-less but i just dont want to plant too many things into the ground where i live(rental)

is there any specific soil that i should use? or just standard cheap garden soil?

oh and when should i do it? i've heard that i shouldn't do it during certain months otherwise it could kill the tree
