If growing from seed or cutting, it is best to keep the tree in a smaller pot for the first 2 or 3 years depending on what size Bonsai you want. If you go to big to fast the trunk will have less character and taper and the nodes will be further apart. You can then let it all grow free in a larger pot and when you it is thick enough and you want to cut it back, all those node points will still be there to throw new shoots off the thicker trunk
