Re: Pinus sylvestris Waterii
Update.
The spring growth has been healthy and compact as there are now lots more buds to diffuse the growth.
The growth is now catching up with the size of the jin.
I am bringing out a new pot for it from Japan.

Re: Pinus sylvestris Waterii
What is this one grafted onto Grant?
Also wondering if you decandle as I have heard differing opinions on decandling scots pine in Aus. I have just cleaned and rewired new growth on my scots but did not decandle as I dont think I should but theres always that nagging doubt

I'm not sure the new pot matches the tree very well. Too shallow and too fancy IMO.
Personally I would prefer something simpler and deeper like this:

Re: Pinus sylvestris Waterii
There's no need to decandle Scots Pines. Just break off the candles at 0,1/3 ,1/2 or 2/3 according to strength. You can remove the strongest if there are 3 or more (which there often is)kez wrote:What is this one grafted onto Grant?

Probably grafted onto seedling scots I imagine.kez wrote:What is this one grafted onto Grant?

I did not decandle or candle snap this one. The new growth has no internodal bare gap and so has no need of decandling. You can just shorten new growth as the new candle emerges and elongates by snapping it shorter. I will do that next year to keep compact.

That pot is certainly deeper but I wouldn't exactly call it plain.treeman wrote:I'm not sure the new pot matches the tree very well. Too shallow and too fancy IMO.

Re: Pinus sylvestris Waterii
The Izumi Ya is a beautiful pot but I think too feminine for this particular tree. I like the drum.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Very good Rory. Now if you can make the pot slightly wider but keep the same depth....Rory wrote:Mike what are you doing to me ....treeman wrote:I'm not sure the new pot matches the tree very well. Too shallow and too fancy IMO.
