Progression thread: Allocasuarina torulosa 1
This specimen was purchased from Bonsai World in Jilliby in 2020 for $16
I now only have 3 Allocasuarina torulosas left. I will be selling and giving away all my other remaining quantities as I try to focus on my favourites.
This one is a beauty. It has a very natural style to it and is my last choice to remain in my personal collection.
It will attempt to be grown like a forest casy, with all the attributes these exhibit naturally.
Grow Allo. torulosa in a medium draining mix. I use a normal potting mix with river sand for good drainage. But I keep a deep pot as insurance against hot and windy days. I've lost quite a few from not having that extra insurance.
Its best to keep a lot of foliage on Casuarinas. They will thank you for it. And don't constantly cut them back. Leave them at least a season at a time before trimming them again.
Rootwork is easy, but be careful of the deep fissured bark. It is very fragile.
Keep an eye out for borers and pests, as they camoflauge easily with the bark on this species.
Keep them in full sun. They love it.
And its best not to over-pot a Casuarina. Try to have the roots filling most of the pot it is in.
For fertilizer I use slow release osmocote native pellets on all my natives. (works for me) But for Casuarina, you can use liquid fertilizer to your hearts content. They love it.

Oops... found the archived photos...it was purchased in 2019
I'm thinking I will grow this tall and slender ... like you'd find in the bush where they try to grow high to reach the light.

Re: Allocasuarina torulosa 1
I’ve really enjoyed your recent native threads.
I have started a couple of littoralis from seed, having seen some impressive ones on this forum, but the bark character in torulosa is something special. I’ll have to try and find one in Melbourne somewhere.
I agree about keeping this one upright and graceful - it has a great natural habit already.

Yes, the username is misspelled: no, I can’t change it.

Re: Allocasuarina torulosa 1
I've cut the top off, and placed it into a deeper pot so it has a bit more insurance from drought.
