Phebalium squamulosum 3

Post by Rory »

Phebalium squamulosum subsp. argenteum 3

This species has been a trial and has proven to be a very successful bonsai candidate.

Phebalium squamulosum stems and the underside of the foliage can have a slight rusty coloured tinge to it.
It shoots all over the tree and back-buds really well, but not usually from the base.
It tolerates heavy root reduction with no problem at all
It tolerates both over-watering and drought.
They are highly tolerant of shade.

Their flowering is beautiful. I'll have to remember to take a photograph of them flowering next time.

You're getting some really good structure there, I'm interested to see how this one progresses.

Phebalium looks to have a lot of attractive options across the different species, some of them have even smaller leaves. The flowers remind of Volkameria heterophylla (Clerodendrum heterophyllum). This would make a nice local substitute!

Really interested in this plant. I bought one the other day for the garden in a nice shady spot. I probably should’ve bought 2 :P

It looks fantastic and I hope you keep the updates coming!

This has been repotted into its first Bonsai pot. Sam Miller pot (USA).
Looking forward to seeing how this develops over time.

It has a tendency to shoot back from low down occasionally, so waiting patiently to see if it does on the bottom left.
