Recommend me a feature tree
HI All,
I have an area i would like to fill with a feature tree that will display nice autumn color similar to a japanese maple, but living in perth and with it being in full sun that's a basic no go.
Could someone recommend something similar ? maybe a trident maple?
i think the end of the street has a liquid amber, i'm not a huge fan of liquid amber's but something maple but with greater reliance to wind and leaf scorch would be great!
any one have ideas?
Thanks in advance
Daniel

Re: Recommend me a feature tree
G'day Daniel,
I,d recommend a claret ash, they cane get as vibrant as the Japanese Maple they thrive in my part of the world (scone, nsw ) they take full sun and tolerate some pretty extreme heat,we have around 10-20 days over 40.c through the summer and very little rain , but come autum time they stand out all over the place, the claret and the golden ash. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=clar ... IGg#imgrc=_"
cheers Scott.

I would recommend Chinese Quince for the stunning colour in Autumn/winter. Absolutely beautiful. Just google it.

Daniel ,Scott has hit the nail on the head. Claret or golden ash will give you what you want here in Perth. Try Wandilla at the bottom of Lesmurdie hill on Welshpool road.'reidy320 wrote:G'day Daniel,

Re: Recommend me a feature tree
Thank you everyone for taking a moment to offer a suggestion!
I think a claret ash looks to be the front runner bit concerned out the potential height however, followed by the chinese tallow.
Ginko i'm not a fan or the colour or leaf shape, same as the golden ash.
How does the strait trident maple go in perth? I've got one as a bonsai it does get some leaf burn but certainly not as bad as a japanese maple.
I guess i have to head out and take a look at them in person! not really the time of year for it haha
Oh i forgot to add has anyone got experience with Chinese pistachio?

Hi All,
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
I picked up a claret ash, chinese pistachio and a ornamental pear and i planted them today in what you could call a grow area.
We'll see how they go in the next few years before moving the one i like / handles the conditions best to right location!

Re: Recommend me a feature tree
Hi,
Unfortunately i ended up moving house and i left them behind.
I did drive past last month and the claret ash was powering on, but the pistachio was out the back so i can't see.
The claret ash from what i can tell is a large tree so you need to make sure you have the room as it grows.
The pistachio when i left it was much smaller but imo it's not the greatest looking tree when younger kind of awkward leggy looking.
I currently have chinese tallow, i think we would have all seen one of those. (It's a fully exposed area and is doing well first year in the ground)
1 japanese maple in a court yard, semi sheltered from wind but gets lots of sun, this is struggling with bad leaf scorch 2nd year in, 1st year i even covered it with a massive umbrella with the same issues.
1 Under a protected patio, in a large pot this is doing quite well considering it was 40 here today!
So for anyone else thinking for JM in Perth, i have seen the rear occasions they have done ok exposed, but for me less wind the better! No wind even better, and almost certainly partial shade for most of the day.
