Demolition Juniper :)
As explained in the "Species ID" topic, i have been on a job close to home, demolishing a 30yr old landscaping yard.
There were 2 large "junipers"....im putting them in quotation marks as im not certain, there was a suggestion that it could be Cuppressus Macrocarpa if it had cones. It has none, and there were no cones scattered in the undergrowth.
As per Alpinearts instructions, i removed 1/2 the vegetation, i also cut back all the dead inside growth.
I then used the 22 tonne excavator to dig it out, which i was grateful for as the soil was very hard and compacted, and filled with palm tree roots.
The tree took all of 5 minutes to dig out, sling up and transfer into a bobcat bucket. It then went over to the smoko hut for root trimming and there it now sits, looking huge and awaiting tomorrow.
Im building a box for it tonight. I cant find soft Scoria anywhere locally, the local landscape yard only has hard scoria at large sizes. So im going to buy a large bag of Akadama and pine chips from Bonsai Mujo tomorrow and use that as my medium.
Hopefully myself and my brother are able to move it from my ute to the box, i deadlift 200kg and my brother is a big bloke but i still have doubts....i dont know how you guys manage these big trees!!

I took up Bonsai to appreciate small tree's!
You've clearly got far more room than I do!

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Demolition Juniper :)
Its a matter of taste as far as tree size is concerned. I have seen some really delightful small trees that are well proportioned as far as trunk size to vertical height and branch thickness in relation to both. However personally I like larger trees and you have me incredibly jealous as it is so difficult to get trees of this size to work with.
Good luck with them, I hope they survive the transplant for you.
cheers,
jeff

Hi
They would make stunning Niwaki styled entry trees to a bonsai garden area either in pots or in the ground.
