Phebalium squamulosum subsp 'lineare' 2

Post by Rory »

Phebalium squamulosum subsp 'lineare' 2

This is an adorable species. I purchased a heap of them from the Wildflower Place at Erina Heights on the Central Coast.
It is incredibly hardy, tolerates a heavy root removal, and grows a thick root system that easily allows rough handling.
I've never lost one to drying out. They do wilt in the strong heat. They tolerate all types of growing medium, light / medium / heavy. They often shoot well from cuts too.
There are many varieties of Phebalium, and a lot of them develop good, thick trunks like this variety.
They have sparkly emerald leaves that seem to twinkle

This one is my favourite Phebalium specimen - I love its elegance.
I have just significantly reduced the roots on this one in September this year in preparation for a bonsai pot soon.

I realize its not quite yet 01.01.2023, but its easier to post that its 2023, so looking back people can easily distinguish that its a year apart. Its only 1 day before the actual date.

I've given it a new home. An Esther Griffiths walsall pot.
Just going to allow it to thicken and develop a lot more before I work it hard.

Cut back and its just starting to push out flower buds. I didn't want it to thicken the secondary branching too much before its ramified more, so have cut back to the structure I want in tact now, which will allow for more ramification to develop and force the thickening, rather than branches I don't want to thicken, and end up cutting off later. I had forgotten that occasionally this tree can be hard to promote back-budding .... sometimes.

The flowers grow in clumps, and are a soft yellow....beautiful!

I still feel this is one of the greatest Genus to work with. More people should be using Phebalium for bonsai.
This particular variant is very hard to acquire though.

I've just allowed this to branch out a lot before I cut it back in a few months time.
I really wanted to get a photo in while its flowering.
The flowers are so small, its really delightful.
