flowering now?? lol

Post by astroboy76 »

hey guys,

i havent been on too frequently lately or given much time to my trees due to a severe illness in the family. however today, when i did the rounds and checked my trees i noticed that one of the two pink hawthorns i have growing in the ground (grafted on a different rootstock so using them for layers once they thicken up a little) is starting to flower. i couldnt believe it. not just a random flower but all over every branch. the sun burnt the leaves off of this tree soon after planting and it never really recovered. almost no new growth all season until the past few weeks it started to shoot from every node and they are all flower buds. its a very confused tree! fits in well with the early autumn colouring on most of my trees too lol. its been a strange year!

Hey Astroboy,
After pulling some hawthorn up along a nature strip in november, all of them seemed to die once potted up. About a month ago though I had decided that enough time was given for them to recover (they looked dead), but when I pulled up one of three that I had collected, there were new white, healthy looking roots, so I stuck it back into the pot. It is visibly budding now, and I wonder whether the same thing will happen as yours!

the only thing i can think of, and i may be wrong, but when i first planted it and all the leaves burned off maybe the tree got tricked into thinking it was dormant? sorta the same way that if you defoliate a prunus too late in the season it will flower. could be wrong though!

So then what will the repercussions be of going into autumn while the tree thinks its spring? ..I guess we will find out soon enough :?

well it prob wont flower next spring im guessing but im nto sure. i knwo if prunus flower ealry they wont flower the following spring as they dont have time to set new flower buds before true dormancy. not that familiar with how hawthorn work

Hey astroboy, Have you got the pics of these in flowers yet? Also any luck with your cuttings? I bought a couple of bare-rooted plants from the website you gave me and they started budding out. Can't wait to see some flowers some days

no luck with cuttings at all! think i might just grow them a bit and layer them above the graft.

i found the plants struggle a fair bit in the extreme heat. although mine could have suffered due to the fact they hadnt yet established in the ground by the time the heat came.

i found the cuttings rot really easily and nothing i tried could get them to strike
