I have a couple but wanted to check if they will be ok, like the Azalea non have been wired before.

I was thinking of the loropetalum and would need to to cut it back alot and put it on a different angle but not too sure if it kill it.
Hi Michael,
If you want something that branches well and has a good chance of giving you a presentable shohin in 14 months, go for the Buxus harlandfi as nr 1, or for the Callistemon. You can always try the Loropetalum (common name: Fringe flower) for fun besides. A friend of mine has a very nice Loropetalum bonsai, only it's a large one, and copious branching doesn't seem to be a feature of it.

Lisa

Sorry, just saw that I'm too late with my advice, you've already entered the Loropetalum. Well, good luck, and have fun!

mm am starting to think it might have been a bad idea entering the loropetalum as i'm not too sure it's going to back bud if I cut it hard.

LOL Lisa
the original finish was going to be August, till I bent the arm of the Comp planners and suggested to make it later. I already got you and extra 2 months

For goodness' sake!!! It seems that some Australians don't have a clue how things grow/don't grow here in the South!
I couldn't/wouldn't have participated if the finish had been end of August. Thanks for the extra 2 months, Ken, but it's a MINIMUM!!!

So I've done my first two entries... Now I'm a little twisted up as to what to submit as my third!! There are two, maybe three, possibilities... A Taxodium Distichum I struck from a cutting approx 12 months ago. Very straight, but that's ok. They are bendy as.
And a Chamaecyparis Pisifera Boulevard I picked up today from a general nursery..... It's got a little bit of movement and some more character in the trunk, but some of the foliage is a bit back from the trunk, and I have learned they might be a bit against back budding....
I've also got a camellia shishigashira that I like... But I don't think I wanna rush over 14months for this one....
Gah the choices!!!!

Only 4 days left to get your submissions in. :crikey: I'd better get busy and decide on my third one.

So far we have 92 entries, I wonder if we will crack the 100 mark :?:

Only 2 more sleeps & I can attack my mystery tree

Now if only I can decide on a 3rd entry. I have 8 potential yamadori across as many native genus...Its too hard :palm:

Maybe I could combine them all into one or just go digging instead, might just find something better suited...

I don't want the embarrassment of having these disqualified so I need someone to say whether they are eligible for the comp before I post them.
These are both from wild seedlings in 2005. As can be seen, neither have had any major work done on them except for trunk chops. The reason I'm asking is because I didn't consider them for the comp and went ahead and cut them back on 25 Aug and re-potted them both into styrene boxes - the smaller one had almost a slab cut of the root section. It wasn't until I was looking through the stock stuff I have that I realized size-wise they would be pretty good Shohin material.

I'd appreciate a reply pretty quick so that I have time to post them if they do qualify - or find some other material to enter instead.

G'day Taffy,

It's great to see you around again ;)

Sorry but we won't be able to accept these as entries. I have knocked back 16 similar requests where people have requested to s t r e t c h the rules just a little bit. As you said, if you had have held off on the cutting back just a few more days. . .
I trust you understand our decision and I do hope you will find some more material to enter with!

Regards,
Steven

I'm just itching to start, I've never styled a bonsai before, I've been practicing my wiring on trees in the yard. I'm usually up until 2am anyway.
