Post by missybonsai »

i would just like some information about air-layering. How is it done? etc. I am going to layer a few of my trees, including privet and hawthorn. Just general info thanks, or any no-nos, tips or tricks.
If there's a thread about this, please just post the link here :)
Thanks heaps

Hi Missybonsai , if you type in layer or air layer into the "search for " box at the top of the topic or your posts page it will bring up most post that have the topic or word in it .Cheers Alpine

Hi Missy,
Concerning your question "is it possible to layer a tree in more than one place at the same time?" In both articles you will see that this is possible.

This link will show you how to do multiple Air Layers on the same trunk.

Hi Missy,

And this is by Mr. alpineart Multi layered Zelkova.

You can track this by clicking on "Bookmark topic" at the bottom left hand side. Then go can to User Control Panel on the top left hand side.
Then Manage book mark, so can see all the topics you mark before there.

I have not had any success myself with multi-layered, but as mentioned by others, it is possible.

Best regards.

Oh yes Missy. Multi air-layers sure can be done.

My avatar is a twin trunk Benjamina I got as reject stock from a local nursery. It originally stood 2 metres tall with the two trunks. I put two layers on each of the trunks at the same time. When they were ready, I removed them and what you see in my avatar is what was left. I've done it quite a few times and the only thing I make sure of before I decide where to put them on is that there is foliage below each layer. I did one tree that I applied one layer in among the foliage and another below the foliage. When I removed them, the base part died - and that was on a fig! I'm not saying it was definitely because of not having any foliage below the layer - it could quite easily been for of another reason altogether - like curl grubs in the black plastic pot or something else.
Regards

Taffy.

Thanks heaps everyone! I will read over your articles - several times - and then proceed to attempt it myself. my privets should take the punishment easily, probably even flourish, knowing the contrary things. Conned my dad into gettng the spaghnum(?) moss and clonex last night, so i'll study the articles a little more, and then wait for some free time to do it. Hang on, did I here myself right? Free time? what's that? I think i'm deluding myself...

Alright so the layers were started maybe six-seven months ago now. The hawthorn has some pink roots showing, but only at one point that i can see so far. Im concerned about the privet, my experience of them is they grow like weeds, but the layer doesnt seem to have taken off; there are no roots that i can see. About how long should a privet take to start showing roots? Should i open the bag around the layer to check if it has started?

Privet should only be about 2 months to grow roots

You can carefully unwrap the plastic adn see what has developed, If you do not have any it may have calloused over and if so you will have to recut and redo

Thanks Ken, did that today. No roots, and it had calloused over. Looks like ill have to try again. By the way, about how long (generally) should it be until the hawthorn layer will be ready?

I have no idea with hawthorn as I only collected my first this weekend :-)
I would be guessing, but maybe 6-12 weeks.
