What is the best way to dig up a small gum tree?
Can I cut off unwanted branches before digging it up or am I best leaving it and cutting it after it recovers from being potted. The trunk is about 2-2&1/2 inches thick and about 5ft tall I want to cut it back to about 2ft but don't know if I should cut it before or after I dig it up. Any advice on the bast way to go about it will be great
Cheers all
Anthony

Hi ANth
Check out this thread from long ago viewtopic.php?f=104&t=3165&" , and also this Wiki page on Yamadori, https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... e=Yamadori
Note really specific to collection Eucs, but some nice linked threads there.
Here is a Wiki article on Eucs, https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... Eucalyptus and some references
I treat Collection of trees the same as Repotting but just much harsher.
If you can, Force dormanacy by cutting back the tree, and then a few weeks later one new growth being pushed, collect the tree and pot up

Re: Digging up gum tree
I just got two. One i rushed, it lost a fair bit of its root system and this morning leaves were grey and brittle.
The other i took absolute care with, retained all the soil/sand from around the roots, and is looking good, it may be reserved energy but i can keep you informed of its health in the coming weeks.

Hi
I have dug really small self sown gums previoulsy and found a better success rate when you stand the pot in a water tray for about 3 weeks.
