Growing Trees from cuttings?

Post by mb1029 »

Hey everyone, i'm curious about the technique to grow trees from cuttings

is there any specific thing i need to do because the internet seems to be full of different ideas

should i get some "root growing" formula and then plant them?

should i just plant them in soil and hope for the best?

should i put them in a jar of water and wait for roots to grow?

should i put them in the fridge?(this one seems to be the weirdest)

Thanks, Michael

It all depends on the species and the time of year. What do you have in mind?
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

i have only propagated deciduous trees. some say take hardwood cutings in winter when they are dormant. i had very little success this way.

i found that waiting until new spring growth has just hardened off. i cut about 6 inch peice of the tree. usually the tip. i then cut the tip of this cutting just above the top hardened off leaves. i then strip all the other leaves off. if the top two leaves are big, cut each in half. i dip the bottom into rooting hormone then plant the bottom inch into damp potting mix. i usually use a small black plastic pot. i then cover the pot with galdwrap or a plastic bag. have quite a bit of success this way.

i have found that checking on the cuttings kills them. i used to life a few to check for callousing. but every time i did this, the ones i lifted would die and rot within a week or so.

patience is key!
Diversity is essential

i'm unsure on the names of the majority of tree names, all i know is pretty much the basics(Maple, Willow, Conifer and stuff like that)

i'm hoping to grab a Maple tho, there're loads in a park near my house(They're massive old ones, probably around 25-30 meters)
