Scale on my Trident Maple.
Hey guys i know this is some scale type and my trident usually get them so i just scrap them off but this time there are more, so because this is the first big pest thing that i have come across in my year of bonsai how do you people normally deal with this? Simple white oil spray or natrasaop? i have herd some people say normal pestiside but cover the pot so shari dont get the roots?
What is the best way of general pest control on bonsai?
Cheers Pat

Re: Scale on my Trident Maple.
Scale is a pest that has a hard shell covering, so normal contact pesticides are not very effective. You need to use Pest oil, using White oil can be dangerous to the plant, as it will block the stomata in the leaves/ needles of plants, Pest Oil does not do this.
That is a cotton cushion scale. You will need to spray again as the first spray will not kill the eggs.
Scale is farmed by ants so when you see ants that are active look carefully at your trees, as they will put the eggs of pests on your plants, so they can feed of the honey dew, which if not controlled, will the turn into sooty mould.
This then becomes a serious problem.

I've just tried this new product from confidor, it's a tablet you push down amongst the plants roots, it's supposed to stop all sap sucking predators, mites, scale etc... we have awful mite issues here... you get the tablet thingys from buzzings, and its by confidor

Re: Scale on my Trident Maple.
any nursery should stock it.
Just ask and you should be directed to it.
