No real movement in these trees yet the buds are just starting to swell so all I have been doing is pinching out the big terminal buds to allow the small dormant buds behind them to develop. Jarrods plum should be flowering or just finishing up.

Hi Craig, I'm relatively new to the refining process of bonsai but have a tree I want to start refining now. Is pinching out the terminal buds as they swell a process that should be done on all deciduous trees at this time of year?

Thanks for the updates guys
You have a lovely garden Craig!
Jarrod, your new bench seems to be in full use now. I think you mentioned that you were considering growing underneath it. Is this still going to happen?

Regards,
Steven

Haha no, just scratching I think.

Not going to grow under the benches. It is easy to mow under and around them so I will leave them. I am in the process of downsizing my collection so I will have more room to squeeze everything on!

Waltron, I pinch the terminal buds of the deciduous trees which have larger leaves like liquidambar, ash or hornbeam but wouldn't bother with say chinese elm or trident maple.
