Two of my favourite things

Post by LLK »

Here are two of my favourite things bought at the CBS show. #1 is a shohin Casuarina torulosa, raised from seed by Silver Hills nursery here in Canberra, and #2 is a ravishing small pot made by Pat Kennedy - who else?
I've always wanted a shohin Casuarina, and to find that charming Torulosa, complete with baby size trunk corrugation, was just lovely.
Regrettably, the Silver Hills nursery is closing, as they can no longer afford the steep rent there. For a time, the owner will sell from his home, while he looks around for another plot of land for his business. I wish him and his family good luck!!

Lisa,
I too was very sad to hear that the nursery was closing (last weekend this coming weekend I believe) as we certainly need nursery's with a bonsai flavour continuing to prosper.
It was a lovely way to spend an hour or two sipping a cuppa amoungst the bonsai.

Thanks, Ken and Watto. The Silverhills owner will advise us through the CBS newsletter where his home address is. BTW, rents in Canberra are such that it's just about only the big chains that can afford them. I hope that Willow Park at least keeps going.

haha I bought one of the nappy pots at the Weston Creek bonsai show, I'm using it as an accent pot at the moment. (Which reminds me, Lisa I really do need to get to one of your clubs get togethers !!) I just got back from Silver Hills, and if you want some good starter material you better hurry. Or if you want they still have their established bonsai there too. I ended up getting 5 plants and some training pots and had to stop short of buying some beautiful pots. Anyway, lovely little tree Lisa and a great pot. If your keen check out Leigh Tafe's Shohin he has one posted up here in a nappy pot.
So the Redwood turns to the Bonsai and says "Lend me a Tenner"......

Gggggrrrrr....iiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnn!! Love the name "nappy pot". Very apt. I wonder if Pat has heard it.
Congrats on your new acquisitions, but geezzz!! Don't tempt me with great bonsai buys!! I've got too many trees as it is (see below), the little Casuarina was an exception. And... oh darn yes, I bought 2 shohin size trees from shibui too, incl. a beaut little Banksia. I intend to enter a shohin display at the next native bonsai exhibition, and need to plan well in advance.

"My club" is not my club. but the Weston Creek Bonsai Group, which is a workshop group, pure and simple. Most members are also enrolled in the CBS, like myself. It's on this weekend (at quite a special garden) and next month Mick Balzary is giving a bonsai clinic.

@Lisa, well when I meant your club, I meant the club you belong to. As for the nappy pot, it was Pat who named it. Its the technique he used to create it! If I wasn't working this weekend and pretty much the first and last weekends of every month I probably would have made more of an appearance at the CBS meets or tried to get to the WCBC for some help with my plants.
So the Redwood turns to the Bonsai and says "Lend me a Tenner"......
