went out and bought some pots and a plant to day and put them in there pots this arvo
my new lemon scented conifer and some mondo grass

my chinese elm i think he looks good im a bonsai pot

my buxis i got him in a larger pot to let him grow for a year or two

all of my plant together just chillin

oppinions please!

a very good start there lachie, you should try to join a club nearby because they are real good for some help if you need it.
Where do you live in NSW? you should put this in your details because it helps a lot when people give you advice.

Welcome ! Not sure of the blue pebbles but whatever floats your boat. If these trees are at the finished size you want by all means leave them in the bonsai pots. If you want them with thicker trunks put them in a grow box or the ground. Once a tree goes into a bonsai pot it slows down dramatically. Joining a club is great advice too

It will be in your best interest to put them in the ground to grow for a while. I know all of this is new to you, and that you want instant bonsai, i know because i was [and probably still am] in the mind set that it happens over night, it doesnt

Everything your doing right now i did i at the start of this year, over looked posts, didnt take into account this a very patience intensive hobby, DIDNT USE THE SEARCH BAR/WIKI pages, and went to bunnings for stock....FAIL.

Thats why ill be straight up with you.


Tip's:

1. Someone told me GROW BIG, FINISH SMALL [didnt make sense to me until about a month ago].
Look for plants that have strong roots [nebari] a thick trunk, dense foliage, healthy branches, movement in the trunk.
The tree's you like today you wont even think twice about in a years time.
Those Bunno's bonsai starters are like a 20 yr plan, especially with slow growing shrubs.

2. Have a good look at the stuff these guys are producing. Examine every style possible, find what appeals to you come back and ask questions, dont ever hesitate to ask questions. EVER.

The blue gravel is a bit loud as Bonsai is all about accentuating the attractiveness of the natural aspects of the tree and not trying to shout out how bright we can make things

See this page on our wiki https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index.php?title=Newbie and read carefully as your trees are Not Bonsai, but the veritable "Stick in a Pot".
We are all newbies once so no worries, but even a Stick in a pot can be learnt from.
Learn to keep them alive and thriving, while saving up for the more mature stock we all strive for and you will be rewarded in the long run hopefully with some nice trees.

Sometimes it's a good idea to buy a "finished" tree from a bonsai nursery to keep the interest going. I would suggest a fig - very hard to kill and so you be wasting your money. Usually buying nursery stock entails buying something with a bigger trunk that you see something within - and have a dig around to see if the roots are any good. Patience is a real virtue in this game - you will get the hang of it as you progress. Good luck !
