alittle help with an attempted willow cutting

Post by mb1029 »

i've been attempting to grow afew weeping willows from cuttings

the cuttings were taken on and "used" on fathers day(parents brought them back from going out of town)

i didn't know what to do with them so i got one of them and planted it, completely natural. so far it hasn't grow any roots but it is still growing, it started to grow a new branch 3-4 days ago, but that's not the one that i'm asking for help with, the one i want some help with is one that i put it a jar of water. i filled a glass jar(like an old pasta sauce jar) with water and put the cutting into it, it has been in full sun the entire time(its on an exterior windowsill) and i replace the water every few days

here're the results(i think those are roots growing? i also think it's dieing abit at the top)

also, this camera i'm using now makes the one i was using before now look like a toy(which is hilariously ironic since these pictures were taken with an eye-toy(yeah that old ps2 game) camera while the others were taken with an olympus digital cam)

Thanks!

willows will get some die back from the tips when taking cuttings ,i have taken willow cuttings up to 2 inches thick and they have struck
I just used quartz sand and potting mix and kept the soil wet .It doesnt hurt to use rooting powder but I suspect it is not necessary.
but always allow for some dieback
cheers

Yes, those are the start of roots - I would be shocked if you couldn't get roots from your willow cuttings. You can chop down a willow tree and throw the pieces of stump into a bog and they will grow, I have done that.
As long as you keep up the water it doesn't matter if you strike them in soil or a glass of water.
All difficult things have their origin in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small.

:D , just watch out it doesn't dry out in that little pot, it's been said that willows should be slipped into a bigger pot(not rootpruned at all) in late summer/autumn,to help avoid dieback,, because the roots are very active in that period, then repot in early spring as per the norm. :tu2:
