Airlayering an Alder.

I have recently acquired this alder and i have worked out the general direction for this tree and i feel like i should have a go at airlayering this tree.

I have done a lil pic/virt here to show where i want to airlayer.

Hi Pat093,
I'm not quite sure what you want in a reply. The position you show where you want the layer to be should work fine. The tree has a reasonable size trunk where you want to layer which will save some years of growing when you eventually remove the layer. This is one of the great advantages of layering. You can have a trunk that could take years to grow.

That is really the answer i was looking for, more so assurance, but also im not sure how Alder trees airlayer.

Hi Pat,
You shouldn't have any problems with the Alder.

I don't know if you would be interested but I have written a book on Air Layering. The following is a PDF file showing the contents of the book.

This section of the book doesn't show the layer being covered up. After applying the Sphagnum moss and plastic I cover the layer in aluminium foil and put a tie around the top and bottom to prevent it from coming off. This will protect the roots from sun and also makes it easy to check the root progression. Just remove the foil, check the roots and then replace the foil.
