Wattle's in a Name?
Today we think of wattle as 'any of the numerous Australian species of Acacia'. However, the word 'wattle' originally referred to a style of building: a wattle wall or fence was made from an intertwining, weaving or plaiting of rods or stakes interlaced with twigs and branches. This practice of wattling goes back over a thousand years. It was possible to build a modest hut out of wattle and daub: using wattle walls and then covering them in mud with a high clay content and whitewashing. This building technique was used in colonial Australia and the local shrubs and bushes that were most suited to this procedure were called wattles. And that is why these trees are known as Wattles.
