Swamp cypress

Post by garryr »

I bought this swamp cypress as a babe. Thought it might be a good idea to put it in my small pond. My Goodness, it continues to grow like the Magic Beanstalk.

Welcome out of the shadows, Garyr. If this is your first post you must have been lurking for while.

I keep my swampy on a gravel tray filled with water. It has developed one 'knee' already by doing that - with yours in your pond it should develop great knees!

Glenda
thanks for that.

I had been keeping mine well watered but in a normal bonsai pot. It wasn't doing much until the penny dropped. Now it loves me.

Happy Christmas.

Knees?

I can see one bump just above the water line.

Happy New Year.

Hi guys

The swamp cypress is still in love with my pond. We are about to move from Canberra to a house on the south coast of NSW - Mossy Point. There will be no pond but I think I will buy a big pot, fill it with water and try that. We will see.

Hi Garry!! I love swampy cypress as much as that one loves your pond!! :P
A big pot filled with water will be fine. Mine are all only in trays. Except for the big on in the foam box which isn’t :/ I might try and get some form of container and get it into water too!!
Plans for bonsai with this one?

I have left my beloved swamp cypress in our now sold Canberra apartment. Had no space for it our new home at Mossy Point, here on the NSW south coast. Regrettable but we will try again

I have read on an American website that one guy probably killed his bonsai by having it in water during extreme heat. ie the water got too hot and killed the tree.

There's apparently a really awesome swampy down south somewhere(wa), that floats around on a raft island in a large pond/man made lake.
As Grant says , if the water tray is too small, in summer the water could get quite warm cooking the roots, something to be mindful of .

Guys, here we are in our Mossy Point home - and I do have space for my swampy. But the bloke I left it with says it died. HMMMMMMM.

Anyway, I need a new swampy. Thought I had one from Red Dragon in Q'Land but it got lost in the post.

Anyone know of a southern retailer who stocks swamp cypress bonsai and is not too pricey for a small to middish bonsai?

thanks

Hi guys

The Raffaele swampie has recovered and is now blooming in Mossy Point on the south coast of NSW. I'm beginning to think it's not a bonsai anymore but the beginnings of a very pleasant tree. No matter! From my previous experience, I have twso swamp seeds just come through and doing well in the Mossy sunshine. Will let you know.
