Post by Jester »

Hi there crazy kids. !!!

Just wanted to know how the Gardenia Radicans take to root pruning? How forgiving are they and what is your opinion in the right time to do it.??

Many thanks in advance

Bat man may know the answer?
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be like water, my friend.”

Regards, Sidd.

I have only done mine once, but treated them like Azaleas
I think I took off about 1/3 the roots and did so after flowering. I have not repotted for 2 years so cannot be certain

I remember when I collected them, they had bugger all roots so they cannot be too sensitive

Hi Jester , mate i'm rougher than most with any treatment i dish out .I root pruned at least 50% off and repotted mine about 6 weeks ago and they have bounced back well , apart from the yellowing which was present before the trimming and is now treated .Mine were collected from Benalla a couple of years ago after spending 3 days at 30 degree's plus in mid Summer sitting on the nature strip with no soil around the roots .

There was 5 plants growing together so it was a bonus when i actually asked the owner for them .He explained they were removed 3 days earlier so they wouldn't survive , well they all did .To me they are stronger than Azalea's as i fail miserably with them after a couple of years .

Cheers Alpine

Forgot to add, If you wanted to pot now, I would trim back and remove any flowers or buds and then repot.

Nice Info Alpine, I always thought they were a bit finicky, but maybe not :-). time to bust another myth maybe :?:

Hi Ken , Mate i would have said no to the survival if asked prior to collecting these ones .The old bloke was in his 80's so he wasn't about to bullshari me when he said they were out of the ground for 3 days , from memory the temps here in Myrtleford were close to 40 degree's. When i repotted 6 weeks ago i raked the roots out as well .
