have you considered the removal of that first lh branch to open up a little more space and see more of the rock-or wrapping the same branch back over the rock so it looks like a root then bringing the branch out to the left from behind the rock-- :?:
-give the impression of a double planting :)

O.K
so i was eager to slip pot this bugger to have a gander at the roots and sort out if its a "Root on Rock' or 'Root over Rock" . So it was out with the training pot and into the tray , sorry too late to take a good pic of its new home .Now the base of the trunk sits on a tiered section of this rock and from this tier/ pocket /ledge, the roots run down over the rock and into the soil .The 2 roots pictured are 10-12mm thick
100_9160.jpg
the rest have not been exposed as yet so i don't think it would be feasible to try to remove it from its present rock . Can anyone with volumes of experience regarding styles tell me which category this thing could be classed in/as or is it something new .

Maybe , Aussie on Rock ;) or Ishitsuki :?:

Hi Guy , i have a plan and the L/H bottom branch will become 1/3 foliage pad and the outer will be jins . It should give an impression of balance hopefully in keeping with the movement of the trunk yet follow the profile of the rock at the same time . It looks a little different now its slipped into a tray . I will post some more pics tomorrow .

Hi Alpine,
very nice tree and i wish i can learn how to do what you have done.
i am just curious to ask if there is a guideline on the proportion of the tree against the rock to follow.
i was wondering if reducing the length of the the left foliages will give more weight or emphasis on the rock?
regards
BKI

Hi BKI ,
If i can do it , anybody can , as for guidelines well i don't follow rules , so to me there is no guidelines .I try to balance all things so they are or will be pleasing to the eye in training or well developed tree's. The rock will no doubt overpower the tree for a year or so to come .It didn't over power in the first initial style as there was plenty of foliage to hide the rock .

As the tree develops the foliage will be lessened in quantity because of the plan for all the jins , but more developed in the areas of the foliage pads .The Jins and there will be numerous , 7 or so up to 200mm long will open the lower l/H section of the trunk/rock area ,however the canopy should draw the attention moreso than the rock .I hope in a few years to come to have a trunk around 40mm in diameter, the jins will be outside the rock perimeter and the foliage that remains should blend and conceal the majority of the large rock .

I have made numerous mistakes in the past putting trainers on smaller rocks only to find i have to remove them and replace with larger rocks or leave them to almost cover and conceal the rock altogether . Its still trial and error with everything i do , that's what keeps me keen to try different things .Its all personal experience , not read and copied from a book or quoted from other sources .

Dare to be different , take up the challenge and reap the rewards.

hi Ian,

mate, geez!

i didnt expect to send you on a brain explosion! apologies!

from what I seen and the classification on style would of been "root on rock, or tree on rock" now with these newer shots and clearer veiw I would classify it as "root OVER rock".

whichever it is it is coming along nicely and sorry if I sent you on a mission that drove ya nuts, I do it to myself all the time and dont usually to others, my bad!

jamie :)

Hi Jamie , i didnt explain myself properly in the first place regarding the rock ledge and the moss . The moss was hiding the truth from the sun until the roots were developed enough to handle the heat , Now several 8-12mm roots should keep the juice flowing , i didn't root prune and they were about a 300 x500mm mat so it should be good for this season . .

Volcanic rock absorbs massive amounts of heat and can fry the roots very quick , i have cooked a few that's why i prefer Scoria as it absorbs water and slowly heats up but not to the extreme of the Volcanic Larva. Plus the weight saving is a god send . Personally i think it could come under all those categories but NOT all together . ;)

Very basic but moving in the right direction . Wiring will have to wait for that spare time i seem to have so much of . The jins will be shorted after they dry out a bit .
