[ID] collected native

I found this little native on a friends property in south east NSW. It has an unusual trunk (not even sure if it is a trunk). I have never seen anything like it before. Has anyone got any ideas.

Not a native expert but the foliage looks like a melalueca and, maybe, Stypheliodes

I am also no native expert so can’t give a positive I.D. but I have lived and collected in SENSW (eastern side of the mountains) and I don’t recognise this particular plant. It does have bark VERY similar to a Hakea Microcarpa that I collected, though the leaf is quite different; maybe another Hakea species?

If there are any Nature Reserves in the area you might be able to get a Species List for the Reserve that will give an idea of species which grow in that area; might help you narrow it down. If there is a Native Nursery in the area that grows stock for revegetation projects they may be able to identify it for you.

Best of luck with it; the bark and trunk have a lot of character and the leaves look small enough to be good to work with. I look forward to seeing how it develops,

Thanks Bodhi and Jan for your help. I have had a look at both species you have suggested and unfortunately it is neither of them. I will wait until it develops a little more and re-post it.

My guess is a type of Leptospermum?

Can you give us a better description? What were the soils like? What plant community etc? Were any in flower? There isn't much to go on with just a few new leaves.

It could be a Montoca spp. but very difficult to tell.

Thanks Joel for the reply. I have been away so I missed your post.
Unfortunately I did not take too much notice of the surrounding conditions as we were riding trails on my mates property at the time. I will just have to sit back and let it grow a little and then post some new pics.
