Pheonix grafted Savin Juniper/Juniperus Sabina

Post by alpineart »

This has been a good project .I planted this in the garden about 14 years ago and in very poor clay soil .It was dug around 5 years ago and potted then forgotten . Dogs chewed it , cats watered it and i really didn't give a bugger .Then i had and idea last week to rip into a Pheonix Graft :lost: .

This is the tap root of a pine tree felled more than 20 years ago .Mother nature took it toll on the soft wood and left behind the resinous hardwood

. The junipers removed from the pots , it was a single plant but was broken in my haste to remove for a digger all those years ago, :imo: i certainly would look twice at purchasing crap like this

The end result of 16 hours of therapy :palm: , mind you it needs some fine tuning but for an instant trainer it certainly has a good future 8-) .Cheers Alpineart

This hasn't progressed as well as i would have expected .There has been a lot of die back possibly relating to the wet season over winter

, however its alive so that in its self is a bonus .Rewired and trimmed slightly

now its back onto the bench , this time its the green house not the out doors .

Cheers Alpineart

Hi Craig , old material is no where near as responsive as young stock .These plants are a bit long in the tooth about 18 years old , they have been with me for 15 years so progress will be 2-3 as slow as the juvenile stock . The blend they both sit in is an old mix not rd scoria and pine bark so i might just do a re-pot over the weekend ,The results from all the trials speak for themselves on all the other tree's and plants i have here . Can't for the life of me work out why i potted them in the old mix , sometimes i need a wee tap on the head , certainly wasn't thinking when these were potted up , the Shimpaku's have out grown these 2 fold in the scoria.

Cheers Alpine
