Starting with Fig clippings

Hey all,

I have had these clippings in a self watering pot now for about a month. The bunch on the front right hand side consists of 4 tied together for fusing. First crack at both fusing and propagation.

Feel free to comment or any advice.

Hi Steve , i strike figs in Victoria without any problems . I used coarse river sand and keep moist , Should be O.K in the setup you have . Try not to over water if the mixture is ie potting mix , as they can rot . I don't use hormone powder or gel on my fig cuttings . Good luck .

I couldn't be bothered to go down to the local hardware to buy sand. Ha lazy. I had the pots with potting mix already in them. I will try not to over water as at the moment they only get watered when it rains. Ha lazy again.

Hi mate,

Just from mucking around with propagating figs ive learnt:

*I use shallow seedling trays with a layer of gravel in the bottom for good drainage.
*They respond better to being potted in washed river sand and potting mix in a ratio of 2:1.
*They root quicker with no leaves.
*And lately ive found it alot easier and less time consuming to propagate hardwood cuttings. (the more gnarly, sumo, tapered the better)
*Scratching the bark and cambium around the bottom 10mm of the cutting helps the root spread and makes it more even around the base.


Have you been using root hormone powder or gel??

I have no idea why the photos can't be enlarged. I had to shrink them in photobuck otherwise they would be too big.

Hi Steve, I think it has something to do with how you are resizing them. read this post thoroughly and you shouldn't have any worries. I had issues when I first uploaded pics too

When pics are attatched from an outside link (IE; photobucket,), they appear onscreen at full size and can not be enlarged..How much bigger do you need the pics anyway Luke

I'm really sorry guy's, but I am pretty useless with computers. I will read the post again and try again next time.
