[ID] what is it ?

Post by Moonbaby70 »

Hi there, I am totally new to bonsai, and I need a little help. I was given a bonsai by a friend which had a label stating it was a Juniper, but I don't know whether to believe it or not. The leaves don't match any juniper pictures I have seen. Your assistance would be appreciated.

Sorry, I have just realised this is in the wrong place.

I've been googling like mad today - Wow, so many similar plants. Is it possible it is a Western Hemlock??

I think Yew leaves are pointier on the ends (though as a novice feel free to tell me I'm dreaming :)

Says 2006 on the rear of the plant ID label, but no plant ID.

Perhaps a call to the nursery that supplied it, via the contact details on the rear of the label might help things ?

Perhaps?

Just a thought.........

Thanks for that. I have emailed the supplier (Bonsai Environment) with these photos. The front of the label says it's a Juniper. Given the time of year, I wasn't sure how long it would take for them to reply. I was just being impatient (I know, a terrible trait...). I guess the care will be fairly similar regardless of the final answer.

looks to me like Japanese Yew, the common or English Yew leaflets lay flat on the branch. here's a pic

I'd go with a Yew as well. I'd suggest the leaves to be small for a Podocarpus.

Hi Guys,

I just received an email from the supplier. Apparently it is a Podocarpus Lawrencei.

Yay!
