Variegated elm care?

Variegated elm care?
I have a small variegated elm here which i plan on using for a broom style, will make another thread shortly with pics for some advice on training but for now i just want to know how to go about pruning. As the branches elongate they start to revert to a normal green leaf, seems to happen past the 3rd pair of leaves. Should i just trim them back when the start to lose variegation? Or let them grow out a bit then trim back?
