A twin trunk trident progression..Acer buergerianum

I acquired this Trident as a stock tree when i bought the Bonsai barn in March 2008. It was growing as a twin trunk with the two trunks only millimetres apart. I could barely slip my hand between the two trunks. In 2009 i made the decision to not sell the tree on and develop it as a twin. The first thing i did was to split the tree at its base and create separation of the trunks. The top of the left hand trunk was manuvoured to fall to the left and shortened. In late 2009 i shortened the right hand trunk and let the tree sit till 2010. This is the trees first defoliation and work can now begin on its refinement. I plan to have a triple canopy falling to the left, but we will see how the tree develops. It has the bonus of lovely autumn colour Enjoy its progress.

I plan something similar with a Japanese maple once i get around to removing a layer from it.

love tridents - but am having trouble deciding which is the dominant trunk--the shortest has a more solid base than the tallest

I plan something similar with a Japanese maple once i get around to removing a layer from it.

It does Guy and i plan to rectify that by grafting a root system to the right hand trunk next spring.
