I found this growing among rock clumps beside the road down Cooma way - although it doesn't seem to bark up, it has fine leaves, and gets thick very quickly. Also some odd little green fruit. I'm interested in its possibilities for bonsai, enough to put a couple of cuttings in. No idea what it is.
Any help appreciated.

It looks like a Hymenanthera at a first glance, I will have second look at it (to see if I can find the species)over my coffee later this morning

Damian is right it is Hymenanthera dentata or commonly known by the very cool name Gruggly bush.

Re: [ID] Alpine plant.
Just to be fussy about it
the plant in question is known as Melicytus sp. It is a variant of Hymenanthera dentata which is found in alpine and subalpine areas. It should grow from cuttings and will likely make a reasonable cascade or windswept. Looks like you missed the flowers. Have fun with that, just watch those spines

Re: [ID] Alpine plant.
Thanks for the feedback. There don't seem to be any spines on mine, and it gets dense and thick sooner than in the unimelb thing, but that might just be growing tough. We'll see how the cuttings go....

Re: [ID] Alpine plant.
Remember, there are likely several variants which are recently/yet to be classified.
