Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Hi all,
Just an update on the Banksia.
I have had the plant in a nice warm spot on my balcony in hope that I could encourage plenty of new growth.I am not sure I am seeing the results that I had hoped yet but I guess its only been 2 months. I have not yet decided on a front for this so I have Left a couple of options for branches. The following photos will be showing either the front or the back. I hav trimed a side branch ready for it to send out 2 new shoots and wired up the new leader. Cheers

An update on the banksia.
I think this is the direction I am heading with this entry. It might be a bit boring but I think I can get a reasonably refined tree in the next 12 months or so. Hopefully another side and back branch and then the apex.
cheers

Just an update on the banksia.
The heat has taken its time to get here but now it has the results are obvious. This should give me plenty of options.

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Ok,
I have potted the banksia down into its pot for this competition and given it a general tidy. I am a little concerned that I didnt find a heap of roots in the training pot but I think that may have been due to over potting the tree and the constant haircuts it was recieving.
I now intend to leave the tree to recover in a bit of shade and allow it to put some growth on ( which will hopefully inturn grow some roots)
My fingers are crossed as I feel this is the make or break period for this tree.
I am hoping to see some thickening of the trunkline aswell.
Cheers

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Not sure if it can be seen but I felt the the tree looked a little lanky at the top so I compressed the top three sections down slightly. Anyhow its an update I guess.

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Things have slowed down considerably with this tree. Probably more to do with lack of attention from me than anything else. Suprise suprise I have changed my mind about the front. branch placement sems to work for me this way but the initial trunk movement is sloping backwards. I am undecided as to wether this is an issue.I imagine this will sit fairly dormant now until next spring when i will defoliate and pump some more nutrients back into the tree.

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Just an update on the banksia.
I have removed the ugly wiring and tried to tidy it up with some new fine wiring.
I am sure that this is the front now and am happy to refine it as is for the comp
Cheers

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Just a quick photo to make sure I havent missed the deadline.
The tree hasnt changed a lot but it has been getting a regular liquid feed so hopefully results will show in a burst of growth next spring. Cheers

Re: [squizzy] banksia integrifolia entry 1
Ok and update for this little banksia.
I am hoping once the weather warms up this tree will push some new growth out and I can expose some of the branch structure and broaden the tree. The aggresive new growth was late last year ( around October) so I will need the new growth earlier than that if I am to acheive what I want.
I am now sure this is the front as I feel the tree needs to come at you and not move away from you. I think it might be worth tinkering with the planting angle so it is slightly more upright though. It is however more important for my mind that it gets the new growth so I may not do this before the end of the comp at the risk of compromising new growth.
I cant wait for warm weather.
Cheers

G'day Squiz,
Nice work mate. When you rootpruned and repotted, what medium didyou use. I am guessing it was in a normal potting mix when you bought it.
Love it buddy
