Here is a leaf that has puzzled many a horticultural expert over the time i have had these . I have had 4 Qualified Nursery men and women give different answers as to the species .The leaf in question is the large golden Elm
2/ Chinese rough bark elm
3/ Japanese gray bark elm - Zelkova - Bonsai
4/ Japanese gray bark elm - Zelkova - Tree
5/ American Horn Beam
6/ Ulmus Procera English elm ?
7/ Ulmus Procera English elm?
8/ Unknown Golden Elm for I.D - Natural sized leaf
9/10- Unknown golden elm for I.D - Bonsai Trainer
9/10- Unknown roots stock from the 3 m high tree
The 2 names i can recall from the Nurseries were
1/ Ulmus Procera "Louis Van Houtte
2/ Ulmus Glabra "Lutenscens"
I appreciate any assistance with the correct I.D.
Cheers Alpineart

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm
Hi Ian
I can't help but do you know what number 11 is ? I found one of these trees at Caboolture and took some cuttings from it - most have failed. It has a distinctive zig zag in the branches and leaf type. Would love to know what it is.

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm
The largest one definitely looks like Ulmus glabra 'Lutescens' to me.
*EDIT* The last one on the right looks like regular Ulmus parvifolia but when it is elongated as often happens during suckering or vigorous growth.

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm
Hi Bougy Fan, its the branch and leaf configuration of root stock on the one Goldem Elm not severed off, a 3m high tree .It does look very similar to a Chinese elm in shape and size however the bud and leaf stalk is distinctly brown not green like Chinese Elms i have here .

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm
Hi Joel , o.k ? could or is Ulmus Glabra grafted onto Ulmus Parvifolia , check out the last pic in the "Carved Elm Trunk" topic and it shows the golden leaf growing with this rootstock .Maybe this might help with the I.D .

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm
hi there , without a doubt this is Ulmus glabra " lutescens " ( golden wych elm ) large leaves that hold their golden colour from spring to autumn , ulmus louis van houtte starts yellow but often reverts back to green over the growing season , also has smaller leaves than lutescens . it is most likely grafted on to the species glabra which do sucker like nobodys business
.

Re: [I.D] Golden Elm [Solved]
Hi eyleene , i think you have nailed it for sure . The leaves do hold their colour on the majority of these trunks . Some do revert to green , but one must remember these 30 odd trunks were from a batch of 100 or so bulk purchased grafted tree's purchased for the Winery as landscape tree's . The trunks which have mixed colours could have a sucker mixed in just below or around the graft mark . With the reduction in leaf size due to Bonsai -ing they blend in very well and the grafts are top quality i can barely see the fused area .
Many thanks .Cheers Alpineart
