The first branch at the back is my preference also.

Would you consider removing the whole top of it from where the black rubber starts?

I certainly would consider it Andrew I am waiting for the tree to settle in and i will make decisions of that nature down the road. I had an excellent question asked by pm and that was why would the main trunk grow against the wind It is a sight i saw regularly when i was driving to Geraldton in W.A. It is as if the tree when in its strongest growing period defies the wind and grows against it. This is why i am waiting to see if the design settles in with maturity. Yes, that is rubber wrapped around the branches. I have done this before with success.

Searching the web, I've found two examples of windswept trees with a lean against the wind. Neither are from Geraldon though In both cases the tree seems to be in the lee side of a hill. This would mean that the hill is creating a sheltered zone which the tree grows into, but after it pokes its branches above the sheltered zone they get windswept to the other side. Does that make sense?

The second photo is very interesting as the whole trunk is leaning against the branch growth. I would also imagine that the trees underside would be trimmed as it is over a roadway. I am, hopefully flying over to Perth this year and driving up to Geraldton where my Mother lives. A good chance to take a photo.

I tend to agree with Andrew on this one.

The windswept look is not quite working with the L in the trunk.

We should ask why the main trunk is able to grow in a bolt upright manner when the tree begins its journey from its base at an angle ,
and then the wind `swept` the branches so dramatically ?

I tend to like trees that go right to left, so have presented the option that way.

Traditionally, if the trunk was to be jinned, it should be in the front of the tree, and so it would travell from left to right.

I feel keeping the tree low in this fashion, mirrors the trees found at Grenough in the photograph.

Just a different design to things, I did about 7 takes on the tree from that photograph, but this is just my thoughts on it.

Thanks for the input Paul. In the back of my head while i was creating its design was the top being Jinned and steamed into a windswept deadwood. I optioned to keep the top growing for two reasons. The first was to see what it will look like in a couple of years and satisfy my curiousity. The second was to have a decent selection of top branching to be able to deadwood and wind blow it. To many times i have acted to hastily and chopped to quickly.

I think ideally a windswept should have a very open look, with a few select branches, some jins would always be good as well !!

Hmmm..you are pretty good with this, I can now see what it would look like as that is the height i pictured it. Can you jin the top and wind blow it at that height

Bodhi, I did a few more this afternoon, ( didn`t realise the time last evening !! ),

and eventually came up with this one.

I agree with Deepeetee, there sould be either an upward angle to the branch tips or downward, not just level, as this would suggest a paralell to the ground, and not to a strong wind that would take a trees shape to this extreme, suggesting a strong wind, but aslo the trees attempt to grow upright.

The large jin may not be best suited, depends on your jinning skills I guess, or prehaps being able to roll the tree backawards slightly to give the jin less height but retain the top bend may help ?

I have a few windswept trees that I am working on, and they always pose interesting questions for styling.

Anyways, just a virt and a little fun !!

It has been a while as this guy recovered and i plotted its new course. The input into its design was awesome. I am please with its direction and now will have to wait for it to settle into its training pot and for refinement of its foliage. Here are a couple of progress's of its 2013 guise and i will wait for its 2014-15 progress
