Thanks, Bodhi. I've got 3 different white Azaleas, but this is the only one that has a decent bonsai shape. The two others still need a couple of years before they've reached that stage. Lovely flowers on them, though. I think you may be right about the present one being a Kurume.

Apparently, you can leave them in the same pot for years and years...

Sorry for replying so late, I hadn't checked that thread any more. Re: your question: No, luckily it isn't true that you can't repot, but yes, they can stand remaining in the same pot for more than the standard 2 years. Not that it's necessarily good for them! I can't give you a nutshell explanation on how to tackle the azaleas, all in all it's too complicated and opinions differ. Best thing is to go to "search" and look up the threads that have been posted on the subject. By the way, I see that you've been into bonsai for 18 years... and you've never done an azzie?? Man, you've missed out on living!! Time you got some, Kurume or Satsuki.

I cut off about 1/3 the roots all around after flowering finishes

Because the flowers are kind of tubular and not flat, I don't think it is a satsuki or belgian indica. Looks like a R.kaempferi flower shape. There are many different ones that are similar and probably known under other names in Australia anyway. Never heard of 'White Dragon'.

It's definitely a kurume on the R.kaempferi side. These aren't pure R.kiusianum flowers. Also very different from kcpoole's 'Alba Magna'. I think that one looks a lot like the Glenn Dale azaleas. So yeah, southern indica R.simsii hybrid genes and some other strange genes. Similar to 'Mount Everest', 'Mary Helen'. 'Alba Magna' may be a new cultivar native to Auz & NZ. At least that's how it is listed.
Definitely not a kurume, no R.kiusianum genes active in those. R.kiusianum has like 2.5 cm flowers. I recon 'Alba Magna' is 10 cm or so and the one in the opening post like 4 to 5 cm.

Was it planted in the ground for a while or has it always been in some form of pot?
Just wondering because I would like to thicken the trunks on my azaleas.

The Only way to thicken Azaleas, is to leave them either in the ground or large pot, and try to encourage any low branches to grow as Sacrifice branches.

It will take quite a few years to put on any trunk girth, which is why collected plants are so good. Unfortunately, Single trunk colelcted trees are very rare
