Help with my ficus retusa!

I have had my little Ficus sitting in my laundry window for about 3 or four years now and have decided i want to do something with it.
After a little bit of research i have seen many magnificent root formations the figs can feature and really want to expand from my current single one.

I would like to know what to do to make my roots look like this:


or even better....


Keeping in mind i wish for it to be relatively small and indoors some advice to get me a cool bonsai!
