Trident Maple red to green
I have a trident maple root over rock that was slip potted into a large polystyrene box in January it had not been fertilised for a while prior to January and had gone into its autumn colors completely. I mean the whole tree was bright red. It has since been getii g a spray with seasol fortnightly and monthly dabble of seamunges it has now thrown green leaves at the end of all branches and in some other places what would cause it to do this?

Re: Trident Maple red to green
I believe one of the ways to improve autumn colour is to back off the fertilizing after christmas, thus the tree get short on Nutrients and gives better colour.
Between the lack of fert and weird weather maybe?

Some Tridents(or most) has red new foliage when it first bursts and then changes to green. Was it the old foliage that changed.

Re: Trident Maple red to green
My trident's new shoots are completely red, and then from the tips down it is green, but you are saying it is the reverse of this? Ar you sure you didn't slip pot it upside-down???

deciduous trees often colour up early if they are dry and under fed. Try giving it a load of ferts and really soak it. your tridents should still be growing like crazy I find this time of year is when they are putting on their strongest growth

Re: Trident Maple red to green
It's old leaves transitioning to green there has not been much growth on this tree whereas my other tridents are booming when I bought it 2 months ago the bloke told me he had not fertilized in ages so maybe the seasol and seamunges have givin it a boost. Thanks to everyone for there feedback.

Dido What you will find is that this is caused by the semi dormency deciduous trees go into mid summer. As Craig stated can be dry and under fed but generally i think the strong sun and north winds shut the trees down regardless of food and water. This creates the simulation of Autumn. Once again as Craig has stated now they start to put on some serious growth hence the cooling climate. (maybe not this weekend
