Pinus Resinosa - Red Pine- Norway Pine

This is on of several Red Pines that were collected about 2 years ago . Unfortunately the before pics were taken with a 14 mp camera and wont upload onto this site . No i'm too old and too busy to learn how to re-size pics for a topic. These were snapped with the old camera and are not the best but it give a general idea of the tree i'm looking for

why , because i have never seen a Norway pine bonsai and the reason why is they don't bend .

The whole tree is one of Pup's "Oh bugger" moments waiting to happen . They are as brittle as a match stick and yes a 5-10 degree bend and they snap .I have tried to use these in the past , but too many breakages put them on the must do table .These do back bud but they also drop branches as the tree grows being apical only growers . Anyway its a starter as they all are and can only improve over time , something i hope i have for a while longer if i stop being a throttle jockey .

Hey Alpine,

I really like the natural look of this tree, it could have been plucked straight from the forest. I assume the large pot is for recovery & growth, it would look really good in a shallow round dark bodied pot, something simple to complement natures perfection.

I look forward to watching this one develop in the coming years.

Hi MattA , they are a difficult tree , but i like the shape of the natural specimens and unfortunately those pics were lost on the computer, so i don't have any reference .When the bark begins to exfoliate it becomes very red . Theses pines "don't" have a tap root and the stabilizers become the support and food supply link so the are easy to collect .

I plan to put it into a shallow pot or custom made Alpineart tray and create a Penjing/Landscape to allow the root run required .These grow in sandy soil so i have placed it into scoria only and its thriving .It will be interesting to see the root development during the next re-pot.

Got some nice character on the trunk and i going to follow its development with interest.

The trunks have fantastic bark , its the main reason i searched the plantations for 10 years to find a hand full of self sown seedlings . Since then the wind blew 50% of them down and they clear felled and burnt the rest Another test plot destroyed along with the supply chain to the self sown Yamadori .

Hi The Hacker , its going somewhere now , took a while but i will get into the rest of them and get some subtle movement into the trunks while their still young .I would be nice to get a 45-90 bend into the upper branches but it will never happen . Its a bit like trying to wire and bend match sticks . They flex and then snap .

Ok , So its not that hard to teach an old dog new tricks , even a young bloke like me can learn . Its easier when your shown how thats for sure . These are the pics re-sized before the hacking and chopping process
