Hi Nick, from experience all Melbourne bonsai nurseries stopped selling akadama because the general customer demand wasn't there, probably due to price – hard to make much mark-up profit especially if no-body buys it = too much effort + most bonsai nurseries now sell their own pine bark based potting mix cheaper (with more profit). Last time I saw it was about 4 years ago, I was in the same nursery about a month ago and asked the owner if he intended to re-order any and his response was "I've been meaning to" which tells me if he gets enough inquiries it may become worth his while. Last time I got a bag through a club group buy, but these are rare.

If there is enough interest on here from Melbourne members you may be able to organise a group buy ... you'd just have to find out who ships the stuff (usually by the pallet-load).

Good luck in your search, let us know if you find some :fc:
Cheers, Ryan

Hi all,

I suppose if you were desperate you could substitute scoria for akadama. :2c:

Cheers,

Brad75.

I don't feel that scoria is the same as Akadama, the propoerties are quite different :imo:

The best option you guys have is to find a few like minded clubs and buy a pallet from Perth, cost is variable depending on shipping (which can be very prohibitive in small shipments). A pallet is roughly 100 bags.

If you find a nursery selling Kanuma, it is likely that it came from the same supplier 3WM, ask them if they can get in some Akadama in the next order.

I got a pallet of Akadama and Kanuma shipped over to secure my/Canberra's supplies in the the short term.

It is the best product I have ever worked with, worth chasing up...

In this thread Steven says: "Group buying or syndicates are not permitted. This is to protect the Nurserymen and women who rely on sales for their livelihood." Fair enough I suppose. However, if it can't be purchased in Melbourne then no Nursery here is being undermined!? :lost: It's probably a good idea to seek clarification from Steven before considering organising such a thing.
