My Radiata Pine

With all the talk about Radiata pines I thought I'd post up my one. This has a photo history that I hope to one put together but for now here is how it is looking. Always working on this tree as it needs a lot of work to maintain. Hope you like it.

I was told by a Pine ( exspert misspelt intentionally ex a non entity and spert drip under pressure ) that they do not make good Bonsai.
As always with these people the talk out of there a#*s do they not.

Creating a pine bonsai like that is an absolute "tour de force". )) I'd love to know how tall it is.
David, do you happen to know the origin of this pine? Is it forestry material, i.e. cloned, or is it by any chance a seedling of older Radiata pines?

As you can see by the photo Radiata pine can make fabulous bonsai and are much underused, in my opinion.

One well known pine exponent has said that if he had his time over he would grow Radiata instead of the rest.

Hi Lisa,
Its about 1 metre in height from trunk base. This was either collected or nursery material a very long time ago (possibly 15-20 years). I've had this tree for about 8 years now. I have a photo history of it which I will have to put together one day. The first photo of it is when it was in a poly box. Lee Wilson did the initial styling probably in the mid 90's.

very nice pine David. i don't have a pine yet but all these posts about radiata pines makes me more inclined to try one out.
Is the care of radiata pines similar to that of jbp's?

I find the care is pretty similar to jbp, but radiata's grow more profusely, so more de-candling. My radiata at the moment isn't looking its best as I haven't thinned out the old needles and it looks a bit messy in areas. They reduce needle size quickly too and once you get them old enough the fissured bark that appears equals that of old jbp.

There was a post here a couple of days ago about the Radiata at the Imagination tree which is really starting to look quite sickly. My radiata is probably the same size but a bit older. Wish I could rescue it as they really don't need much work to come back to life strong and health. But at $3K it is much too over priced. Could only imagine what my radiata would be worth if it was in that nursery!!!!!!

I'm starting to compile some of the history of my radiata and hope to have an article one day for our club's newsletter. It's great looking back through old photos and seeing how far the tree has come along.

Thanks, David, I thought it might be quite tall. Knowing helps to imagine the tree.
I'd say that 15 - 20 years since acquisition is a pretty good estimate, judging by the Radiata's I've seen so far, mine included. Until now, I've been put off working on mine, because of that darn juvenile foliage that you get all over the tree, which makes it look so untidy for long periods. However, your tree and the one in the Nat. Collection helped me to have another go. Mine was a K-Mart reject, after Christmas 1998, incidentally.

Updated Photo on my Radiata Pine after being thinned out and that is a tennis ball at the base of the trunk for size comaprison.
