Hey VSK,I am with Craig on this one as well ,I cut a maple back last winter with a trunk of 4 inches thick and it has done the same thing as yours
but still has plenty of growth shoots over 1 meter long just not real healthy ie deformed leaves,it is in the same spot and mix as all my other maples ,
I am not concerned as all should be good next spring, a bit of mulch around your tree would do no harm

Hi V.S , mate i've had a terrible year with Palmatum's loosing close to 300 younger stock plants . They leafed out early then a severe frost killed them in a single night . The 2 dozen remaining tree's have distorted leaves and poor growth , cant find any reason for it , yet the parent tree is fine . Some of the 50-90mm layers have the same disfigured leaves and poor growth .I have put it down to all the rain we have had up here . Their alive and no doubt they will grow better next season , here's hoping anyway .

Thanks everyone for their contribution. Im pretty happy just to leave it be and let nature take its own course. I might regulate watering the patch a little less.
Alpine, thats not good to hear mate, hopefully they come good in spring for you. Ill light some incense and pray to the gods of bonsai that our maples come back in spring with flushes of beautiful new growth.
Rawhide, are you referring to the weed at the base of the maple? if so, yer its a prick of a thing. I should of plucked it out before photos posted on a public forum
