My other old olive

Found this olive 16yrs ago ive had it planted in the ground for a while an just been letting it grow then trim back an so on . Today gave it a trim wired up some branches low on cash right now so used some old wire i had lying around .
All the dead wood is as it was when collected. I cut it back about 3 weeks ago an now is budding well an has good growth gave it some seasol 2 weeks ago an has done it well i think . The base of the tree is about 30cm X 30cm tree height is about 72cm. Here are some pictures the branch to the right will be cut back to the red line it will still cross the 2nd trunk a bit but think it will work well for the tree i think .

Hi, I do not know olives at all. But I like the trunk. Amazing looking trunk -- if there were no leaves, I would say there is no live.

So what are your plans for this tree? I have seen, on the web, olives tolerate very harsh treatments; but I think it would be a while before you can dig this one up?

Interesting stock, I assume the Trunk on the right is all dead and to one on the left grew after it died?

The right dead trunk I think will either go completely, or be reduced a lot in the final shape?

Hi kcpoole yeah the second trunk that is dead might be a bit much when i use lime sulphur . Im thinking about moving the front abit more to the left hiding the second trunk a bit not sure right now planning on lifting it in spring hard to look at it in the ground cant view all possible angles right now .

You've got some crazy bases there! Great age and texture.

The graceful sweep of the dead trunk looks good, but the way the trunks separate and then bang together again might be a problem. Can you get some kind of screw/clamp/wedge thing to slowly put pressure to separate them, over maybe a year or so? Otherwise one needs to go, which would be a pity.

It will take time to rebuild the tops the way you want them, but the base makes the work worth it.

Hi GavinG i have another picture which was taken around to the right a bit this angle shows a gap between the trunks maybe the better angle to work with you think

It's hard to tell from this side of the screen, but to me everything works better at the first angle, except the trunks collide. At the second angle the flat branch at the top of the dead trunk moves away from you, which doesn't work for me. Best of luck.

Lifted this tree last yr fathers day it didnt do well after that 50% of the leaves fell off due to a poor root system kepted in a sheltered place for all summer.
About 6 weeks ago when the weather started to cool down moved it to a sunny position an now it has new shoots coming on most branches

I love your olive! I would direct the branches on the left side, more downwards, so they follow more the movements of the trunks.

This tree final back to full health looking at working this tree today as its bushy an could have some nice branches to work with

Mainly thinned it out wired up a few branches so it should get growing well from now as the weather warms up hoping to have all the primary bramches in place this season
